Outdoor play is essential for all kids, and summer offers the perfect opportunity to step outside and enjoy some fun in the sun! To help you make the most of the season, we’ve compiled FIVE exciting therapy ideas that not only target your therapy goals but also help you stay cool while beating the heat.
Frozen Sensory Bin
Activity: Freeze toys in balloons and other fun shapes and add them to a sensory bin. Give your client warm water, salt, chisels, and other tools to excavate and watch them melt.
Goals: Promotes sensory exploration and fine motor skills. Include communication targets in the ice cubes to naturalistically increase language skills.
Water Balloons
Activity: Toss a water balloon back and forth from further and further distances until it pops, or have your client try to aim to hit different items in the backyard.
Goals: Improve hand-eye coordination, gross motor skills, and social skills. BONUS, if you have them aim for items in the backyard, you can include receptive language skills!
Lemonade Stand
Activity: Follow a recipe to make lemonade then set up a lemonade stand for the clinic or neighborhood.
Goals: This amazing activity is great for all ages and skill levels. You can target following instructions while making lemonade, social skills, and basic math and money skills.
Obstacle Course with Water Stations
Activity: Set up an obstacle course with various stations, including hopping through hoops, crawling under ropes, and stopping at water stations for a quick cool-down spray.
Goals: Enhance gross motor skills, balance, and problem-solving.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Activity: Create a list of items to find outside, then go on a walk or explore the backyard to find each item and check them off the list.
Goals: Develop observational skills, attention to detail, social interaction, and receptive/expressive lanague.
